Nant Conwy were victorious against Mold for the second time, having won the home encounter at the end of March, though the match itself proved somewhat different to that first encounter. Two weeks ago it was the backs taking all of the glory. Perhaps due to the windy conditions, it was the turns of the forwards this week.
Tries by flankersTomos Williams and Ifan Emyr Williams, both converted by Caron Davies, against a penalty by Mold, gave a half-time score of 14 - 3 to Nant. An early second half penalty by Davies follwed by two more tries from Tomos Williams and one by Sion Pringle, two of which were converted, against a Mold try, gave Nant victory by 36 - 8.
Like the game two weeks ago, the bigger Mold side were strong in the tight play and attempted to run the ball as often as possible. Again, as in the last game, Nant defended resolutely, and themselves ran the ball as much as possible. However, defence, and the blustery conditions, resulted in both sides making few clean breaks. There were some though, the first coming from the Mold centre, on 5 minutes, who was through until being brought down by a try-saving tackle from Pringle. Mold kept up the pressure and were unfortunate to be denied a try when the ball carrier was held up over the line.
The most effective of Nant's breaks were being made by Cai Jones and Ifan Williams with darting runs from scrums and rucks. It was these two who combined to make a break and set up the ruck from which Tomos Williams claimed his first try with a strong drive to the line on 14 minutes. Mold were soon back on the attack and converted a penalty after 18 minutes.
Ifan Williams then got his try, after 28 minutes, with a powerful break down the middle, leaving would-be tacklers in his wake,to score under the posts.
With both tries being converted, and Mold failing with a further penalty attempt, Nant were ahead 14 - 3 when the half-time whistle was blown.
Davies extended the lead a minute into the second half with a penalty conversion. Minutes later the Jones/Williams combination again broke down the middle and Tomos Williams was on hand to go over for his second try. Davies converted to stretch the lead to 24 - 3.
Mold were determined to take something from the game and had plenty of possession through their forward driving play. This eventually paid off after 60 minutes when a break down right, and some missed tackles, saw the winger go over for an unconverted try.
The difference in the score line was restored a little over 5 minutes later when Tomos Williams got his third try, forcing his way over following driving play by the forwards. The conversion gave Nant a 31 - 8 lead.
With five minutes to play, the backs finally got on to the score sheet. A break form the scrum by replacement scrum-half, Deio Williams, saw quick passing along the three-quarters then an inside pass to Pringle coming through at speed. Despite having the better of the last 5 minutes, Nant were unable to add to their score.
A good win by Nant who next meet Llandudno on 13 April.
