Nant Conwy 38 - 12 Wrexham

There was kind of symmetry to the scoring in this game. Nant outscored their opponents by 3 tries to one in each half with Nant scoring two before Wrexham responded, then Nant getting a third. the symmetry was spoilt by Wrexham converting their second try, or missing their first conversion, depending on how you look at it.

The game itself couldn't be described as a classic. Wrexham's tactics appeared to be that they would try to run and ruck as much as possible, whilst Nant, not averse to rucking themselves, were happy to tackle anything that moved and bide their time until oppurtunities presented themselves. Nant also kicked well knowing that despite giving up possession, the follow up tackling would result in territory gained.

A couple of half chances came their way in the first 20 minutes but it was Wrexham who had the majority of possession, if not the territory, having made little inroads into Nant's half. It was on 20 minutes that Deian Roberts, making a first start following a long-term injury, seemed to decide enough was enough. Picking up the ball from a ruck he took the direct route to the try-line, his jinking run leaving defenders flat-footed. Cain Jones' conversion gave the home side a 7 point lead.

Five minutes later, Morgan Dafydd, another player returing from long-term injury, burst over for try number two when, from a ruck, Roberts popped the ball to the centre. Jones was unlucky with the conversion from wide out that hit the post.

Wrexham continued with their tactics of rucking and running with the ball and trying to force their way past Nant's defence. They were well contained and the only meaningful incursion into Nant's 22 came from a penalty giving them a lineout 10 metres from the Nant line. They kept to the same tactics of running and rucking and eventually got their reward with a try near the posts, though Nant players appeared to think an infringement had taken place. The conversion was missed but Nant's lead was cut to seven.

From the restart Nant were back on the attack, closing down Wrexham's attempts to clear the ball. The visitors managed to get some respite throuh a penalty kick to touch. However, Nant stole the ball and the two earlier scorers combined when Dafydd gave a scoring pass to Roberts. The conversion by Jones gave Nant a 19 - 5 Half-time lead.

The seconf half followed a similar pattern to the first. Wrexham trying to run or ruck their way to Nant's try line, Nant content to tackle and take the opportunities that came their way. The first came after three minutes when Sion Pringle joined the line to outpace the cover and put Cain Jones over for a try on the left, which he duly converted.

Nant's next try came following a dropped pass by the Wrexham backs just inside the Nant half. This was picked up by Nant and two passes later Siencyn Metcalfe strolled over in the right corner.

Thirty minutes into the half Wrexham got their second try when some lax tackling allowed them to make ground through the middle and eventually go over in the right corner. The conversion made it 31 - 12.

Nant, however, were determined to respond and they duly did. Though they presented Wrexham with the opportunities to clear their lines through penalties, poor handling saw Nant take quick advantage. In the last move of  the match, another dropped pass saw Nant quickly move the ball, Carwyn Ellis passed to Metcalfe then looped around to take the return and go in under the posts. Cai Jones scored with the conversion to give the final score of 38 - 12 to Nant.

Next up for both teams are National Division 1 Cup games. Nant entertain Pwllheli while Wrexham host Cobra.
