Mold 14 - 87 Nant Conwy

It was posted somewhere recently that, in Rugby, size is an illusion of dominance and that skill beats mass. This could be said to apply to this game when Nant Conwy met a strong, bigger Mold team. It was a game in which Nant demonstrated their all-round skills and everything seemed to come together. The passing, handling, kicking, running lines and support clicked for most of the match, despite the windy and rainy conditions in the first-half when Nant ran in seven of their 13 tries and hit 6 conversions. Mold did get on the scoreboard with a converted try but this was a consolation in a half dominated by Nant.

The second half saw Nant score a further six tries, five of which were converted. Another try was scored and converted by Mold to give a final score of 14 - 87 for the away side.

It was Sam Hughes who led the charge from the start and who scored the first try in the sixth minute. This was soon followed by an Ifan Williams try. From the restart following the first try, the ball was put straight into touch. Though Mold won the subsequent scrum, the ball was dropped and snatched up by Nant for Williams to go over. The two conversions gave Nant a 14 point lead.

Despite this early set back, Mold came back strongly and had Nant under pressure on their line. Good interpassing saw Mold break through for Le Tissier to touch down under the posts making it 7 - 14. This served to ensure that Nant knew any complacency would be punished.

Most of the remainder of the half saw Nant cut loose, scoring at regular intervals. The third try came from Cai Jones in the 13th minute following the ball being ripped from the Mold ball carrier. Four minutes later Nant won a lineout on the opposition throw. Sion Pringle joined the line, making the break to put Rhydian Jones through. From the restart, Nant were immediately back on the attack. The ball was fed to Ifan Williams who went through for his second try.

The sixth try came from a set move following a penalty. Nant dummied the ball to the left before going right. The final pass found Caron Davies who skipped past the last defender to touch down. All tries had been converted by Davies giving Nant a 42 to 7 lead.

The final try of the half was scored by Rhydian Jones who came over from the left wing to take a final pass on the right wing and go in at the corner. This gave Nant a half-time lead of 7 - 47.

Mold kicked the ball over the dead-ball line to start the second half. From the scrum, Nant attacked down the left and Jones went in for his hat-trick try. The conversion by Jac Ellis, who had taken over the kicking duties, gave a lead of 54 to 7. Following this score Mold had their best spell of the match, when, for 10 minutes they dominated territory and possession. This led to their second try in the 65th minute, with a driving maul following line-out ball, for S Jones to touch down.

However, Nant restored the lead 5 minutes later when Mold lost the ball on a throw near their line for Tomos Williams to crash over. This was soon followed by a try for Siencyn Metclfe who took an inside pass when the ball had been gathered from a loose touch-line drop-out.

Within five minutes Davies went over for his second try, taking the ball on the left wing. The final try came from Brychan Dafydd who outpaced the defence following Davies's break through the middle.

The final whistle came when a dropped pass by Nant was kicked dead before Mold could capitalise.

Overall, a fine win. The management team will be happier with the overall play and the cutting of errors from the previous week.
