This clash between the leagues top two teams, both of whom had won all their matches to date and were seperated by just 2 bonus points, promised to be a great game. And so it proved. With the game swinging first one way, then the other and back to the middle.
After twenty minutes Nant looked to be in control, scoring two tries despite conceding territory and possession. The game then swung the other way as Caernarfon scored two tries of their own then a penalty to give them a half-time lead.
Nant equalised early in the second half only to again fall behind soon after to a coverted try. A penalty, from which a Caernarfon player was sin-binned, reduced the deficit to 4 points. The visitors seven point advantage was then restored through another penalty after an interception had almost brought Caernarfon a fourth try.
Nant's pressure eventually paid off with minutes to go when replacement scrum-half dived over for the try which was converted.
This was a rare occasion when Nant had to come back from a defecit with so little time left. Things appeared to be going well to begin with. It was Rhydian Jones's persistance that brought the first try. Chasing a kick ahead he was able to dribble the ball past two defenders to touch down in the left corner.
Cai Jones got the second try following a break by Brychan Dafydd. His clever pass to Jones allowed the scrum half to sprint to the line and a 10 - 0 lead.
The lead was short-lived as Caernarfon's second row, Jack Davies, was able to sidestep would-be tacklers and stroll over. The scores were brought level when a two-man driving maul was able to force its way over and Dafydd Thirsk grounded the ball. This was soon followed by a successful penalty to give Caernarfon a 10 - 13 half-time lead. It was a lead they deserved for the pressure they had applied in the half.
Though Nant equalised early into the second half with a penalty by Cain Jones, Caernarfon went ahead when the same second row player, Davies, was able to stroll in from some distance, again with too much ease.
Nant came back again to reduce the lead to four points through a second penalty by Jones only for the difference to be restored. An intercepted pass in the Caernarfon 22 looked certain to bring a try until Rhydian Jones's last ditch tackle saved the day, though a penalty was awarded from the resultant ruck.
Mounting pressure by Nant eventually paid off. From a line-out on Caernarfon's 5 metre line Nant set up one ruck after another until Deion Roberts dived through the middle for the try and equalising conversion by Davies with minutes to go.
An enthralling game which could have gone either way, though it's likely the visitors were more disappointed having come so close to the win.
